How do I count tokens for Claude?

Does Claude use the same tokenizer as GPT?
No. Claude has its own tokenizer and usually needs about 30% more tokens than GPT for the same English text. This counter applies that difference to its estimate.

How Claude counts tokens
Claude uses its own tokenizer, which Anthropic does not publish as a library. For the same English text it produces about 30% more tokens than GPT's tokenizer, so the same prompt costs more tokens on Claude than the price per token alone suggests. This counter applies that difference automatically, so the Claude numbers above are a close estimate.
