Is ChatGPT Plus cheaper than the API?
For light use, usually not: a few dozen short messages a day cost a few dollars a month on the API. For heavy daily use with long chats, the $20 plan is often cheaper. Enter your own usage above to see where you are.
Why do long conversations cost more on the API?
Chat models are stateless. Each new message sends the whole conversation again as input, so the 10th message of a chat costs far more than the first. Subscriptions hide this cost behind usage limits.
Does my language change the cost?
Yes. The same text in Korean, Hindi or Greek needs more tokens than in English, so API costs rise by the same factor. Subscriptions cost the same, but you reach their usage limits sooner.
