Claude Pro Price 2026: What $20 Gets You, Limits, Free Trial
Jonhisking · October 12, 2026

Claude Pro is Anthropic's main paid plan, and its price looks simple: $20 a month. What you get for it is less obvious. The usage limits have no fixed message count, there are two separate limits running at once, and Anthropic changed the rules several times in 2026. This guide covers the official price as of October 12, 2026, what Pro includes, how its limits work, whether there is a free trial, and when Max is worth it instead.
How much is Claude Pro?

| Plan | Monthly billing | Annual billing |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 |
| Pro | $20 a month | $17 a month ($200 a year) |
| Max 5x | $100 a month | Not offered |
| Max 20x | $200 a month | Not offered |
| Team Standard (per seat) | $25 | $20 |
| Team Premium (per seat) | $125 | $100 |
| Enterprise (per seat) | – | $20 plus usage at API rates |
- Annual billing saves about 17%. You pay $200 up front instead of $240 over a year.
- Prices exclude tax. Anthropic's pricing page says applicable tax is added on top. Its help center lists Pro at $20 in the US and £18 in the UK, and shows local currency where it is supported.
- App store prices can differ. Anthropic's help center says "mobile pricing may vary depending on your app platform," and it doesn't publish the app prices. Compare the price in the app with the web price before subscribing.
- Max is monthly only. There is no annual discount on either Max plan.
- Team needs at least 2 seats, up to 150.
What Claude Pro includes
According to Anthropic's pricing page, Pro includes everything in Free plus:
- More usage than Free. Anthropic says Pro gives at least 500% of Free's usage at peak times.
- Claude Code, Anthropic's coding agent, in the terminal, IDE and desktop app. Free doesn't include it.
- All three model families: Opus, Sonnet and Haiku. Free gets Sonnet and Haiku only. Fable is available on Pro only through paid usage credits.
- Unlimited projects (Free is limited to 5).
- Research, Claude's multi-step web research mode.
- Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365.
- Dashboards (beta), task handoff and scheduling.
Free already includes memory, connectors, web search, Artifacts, file creation and code execution, so Pro doesn't add those; it gives you more room to use them.
What Pro doesn't include: API usage. The Claude API and Console are billed separately, per token. See How much does a Claude token cost?
Claude Pro usage limits

Pro has two limits running at the same time:
| Limit | How it works |
|---|---|
| Session limit | Resets every 5 hours |
| Weekly limit | Applies across all models; resets weekly (Settings > Usage) |
- There is no fixed message count. How far a limit goes depends on the model, the length of your conversations, attached files and whether you use Claude Code.
- Anthropic's one estimate: about 45 messages per 5 hours for short conversations on a lighter model. Longer chats, big files and Opus use the limit much faster.
- The Claude app and Claude Code share the same limits. A long coding session leaves less for chat, and the other way around.
- You can keep going past a limit by turning on paid usage credits.
- Anthropic may add monthly caps on top, according to its help center.
What changed in 2026
- May 6, 2026: Anthropic raised Claude Code's 5-hour limits by 100% for Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise, and removed the extra limit reduction during peak hours for Pro and Max.
- May 13 to July 19, 2026: Claude Code weekly limits were 50% higher for paid plans. That promotion has ended.
For a fuller explanation of both limits, see Claude Code usage limits. To see how many tokens the plans work out to, see how many tokens you get with Claude Pro and Max.
Is there a Claude Pro free trial?
Not right now. Anthropic's pricing page doesn't offer a trial, and its promotions page lists only two offers, both expired:
- One free month of Pro for new sign-ups with a work email, October 29–30, 2025.
- One free month of Max for returning Max subscribers, October 29 to November 1, 2025.
Pages that promise a Claude Pro free trial are usually describing those 2025 offers. Anthropic's help center says there are no standing discounts. We found no official student discount either.
The closest thing to a trial is the Free plan: it has Sonnet, Haiku, projects, memory and web search, so you can see whether Claude suits you before paying. What you can't test on Free is Claude Code or Opus.
Can you get a refund?
- Generally no. Anthropic's help center says payments are non-refundable except where its terms or the law say otherwise.
- EEA and UK users can cancel within 14 days for a refund, reduced in proportion to what they used.
- iPhone subscriptions are refunded through Apple, not Anthropic. Android refund requests go to Anthropic Support.
- Moving to a Team plan cancels your Pro or Max subscription with a prorated refund.
How to subscribe and cancel
- Subscribe at claude.ai/upgrade on the web, or through the Claude app on iPhone or Android.
- Cancel on the web or desktop: Settings, then Billing, then Cancel.
- Cancel in the mobile app: tap your initials, then Billing, then Manage subscription.
- Timing: cancel at least 24 hours before your renewal date. You keep Pro until the end of the period you paid for.
Claude Pro vs Max: when to upgrade

| Pro | Max 5x | Max 20x | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price | $20 a month | $100 a month | $200 a month |
| Usage | Base | 500% of Pro | 2,000% of Pro |
| Anthropic's message estimate (per 5 hours) | About 45 | At least 225 | At least 900 |
| Fable | With paid credits | Up to 50% of weekly limits | Up to 50% of weekly limits |
| Output limits | Standard | Higher | Higher |
- Max 5x costs the same per unit of usage as Pro. You pay 400% more for 400% more usage.
- Max 20x is the only bulk discount. You pay 900% more than Pro for 1,900% more usage, so each unit costs 50% less than on Pro.
- Upgrade when you hit the limit most weeks. If you run out only now and then, waiting for the reset or buying a little usage credit costs less than $80 more a month.

How Claude Pro compares with other $20 plans
| Plan | Price | Coding agent included | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Pro | $20 | Claude Code | 5-hour and weekly limits |
| ChatGPT Plus | $20 | Codex | 5-hour window in Codex; weekly limits may apply |
| Cursor Pro | $20 | Cursor's agent | Monthly usage pool at API prices |
| GitHub Copilot Pro | $10 | Copilot agent | $15 of AI credits a month |
- At $20, Claude Pro and ChatGPT Plus are the direct rivals. Both include a coding agent and a chat app with shared limits. See ChatGPT Plus vs Pro for OpenAI's side.
- ChatGPT and Copilot have free coding options; Claude doesn't. Codex runs on ChatGPT Free, and Copilot has a free tier. Claude Code needs Pro or higher.
- For all four side by side, see Claude Code vs Codex vs Cursor and AI subscription prices compared.
Is Claude Pro worth it?
- Yes, if you use Claude most days. Pro gives at least 500% of Free's usage and adds Opus, Claude Code and Research.
- Yes, if you want to try Claude Code. Pro is the cheapest way in.
- Probably not, if you chat a few times a week. The Free plan may be enough.
- Not, if you only need the API. Pro doesn't include API usage; pay per token instead. (Max, by contrast, lists $100 or $200 a month in API credits on the pricing page.)
- Consider Max if you code with Claude for hours every day and keep hitting Pro's 5-hour limit.
My own path
I started on the Free plan, moved to Pro, and now use Max 5x. I work in the Claude desktop app on one PC. Coding work and tasks that use external MCP tools used a lot of tokens, so for that kind of work Max felt like the better fit than Pro. If you only need other kinds of work, Pro felt like enough. When Opus 5 was the main model, I used up my limit. Since Opus 5.5, I haven't hit it, although one recent week reached 93% of the weekly limit.
Verdict
- Claude Pro costs $20 a month, or $17 a month billed annually, plus tax.
- It adds Claude Code, Opus, Research and more usage to the Free plan, with no fixed message count.
- There is no free trial right now; the 2025 free-month offers have expired. The Free plan is the way to try Claude first.
- Upgrade to Max only if you hit Pro's limits most weeks; Max 20x is the only plan with a lower price per unit of usage.
