ChatGPT Plus vs Pro (2026): $20 vs $100, $200 and $500
Jonhisking · October 11, 2026

ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month. ChatGPT Pro now comes in three sizes, $100, $200 and $500, and since September 29, 2026 the difference between Plus and Pro is less about features and more about how much you can use. This page compares the two from OpenAI's official pricing page and help center as of October 11, 2026: what each plan includes, what Pro adds over Plus, what you pay per unit of usage, how the context window and Codex limits change, and when the API is cheaper than either.
ChatGPT Plus vs Pro pricing (2026)

| Plan | Price per month (US) | Usage vs Plus | Ultrafast |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plus | $20 | baseline | – |
| Pro 100 | $100 | 500% of Plus (reported) | – |
| Pro 200 | $200 | 1,000% of Plus (reported) | – |
| Pro 500 | $500 | 2,500% of Plus (reported) | ✓ |
- Prices come from OpenAI's help center: Plus is $20 a month, and the three Pro plans are $100, $200 and $500.
- The usage multiples are not on OpenAI's pricing page. OpenAI's help page only says Pro 200 includes more usage than Pro 100, and Pro 500 the most. The Pro 100 and Pro 200 figures (500% and 1,000% of Plus) were stated by OpenAI's Thibault Sottiaux on X (as reported by WinBuzzer), and the Pro 500 figure (2,500%) comes from press reports (Windows Report). Treat them as reported, not guaranteed.
- Ultrafast is Pro 500 only. It is a faster mode for GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol. It draws down your included usage much faster than the standard mode, per OpenAI's help center. Pro 100 and Pro 200 don't include it.
- Outside the US, prices differ. In Korea, for example, OpenAI's pricing page lists Plus at ₩29,000 and Pro from ₩159,000 a month.
What Plus includes
Plus is OpenAI's main paid plan. According to the pricing page, it adds these to the free plan and Go:
- GPT-6 based advanced reasoning
- Higher message and upload limits
- More complex and accurate image generation (if you generate images by API instead, see the image cost calculator)
- Expanded deep research
- Expanded memory and context
- Projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs
- Higher Codex limits
- More ChatGPT Work on desktop, web and mobile
- Early access to new features
On Plus, all the current GPT-6 models (GPT-6.1 Sol, GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna) and the GPT-5.6 models are included. The one model Plus does not get is GPT-5.6 Sol Pro.
What Pro adds over Plus

Everything in Plus, plus the following, again from OpenAI's pricing page:
| Feature | Plus | Pro |
|---|---|---|
| GPT-6 models (6.1 Sol, Astra, Sol, Luna) | Included | Expanded |
| GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra and Luna | Included | Unlimited (fair use) |
| GPT-5.6 Sol Pro | No | Yes |
| Reasoning | Advanced reasoning (GPT-6) | Expert reasoning (GPT-6 Astra) |
| Instant model context window | 54K tokens | 128K tokens |
| Reasoning model context window | 256K tokens | 400K tokens |
| Codex and ChatGPT Work | Higher limits | Longer sessions |
| Dot, the always-on agent | No | Yes |
| Image generation | Higher limits | Unlimited, faster |
| Deep research | Expanded | Maximum |
| Response speed | Fast | Ultrafast on supported tiers (Pro 500) |
Three of these change what you can actually do, not just how often:
- Context window. OpenAI estimates the usable input as about 40 pages of text for the Instant model on Plus versus about 250 pages on Pro, and about 320 versus 680 pages for reasoning models. If you paste whole contracts, codebases or reports, this is the biggest practical difference.
- Dot and GPT-5.6 Sol Pro. The always-on agent and the GPT-5.6 Sol Pro model are listed for Pro and no other personal plan. Pro can also share plugins with a workspace.
- GPT-6 Astra. Expert reasoning on GPT-6 Astra is the headline of the Pro card. Plus includes Astra too, with lower limits.
For everyday chat, writing and short questions, Plus has the same GPT-6 models as Pro. The differences are the limits, the context window and a few Pro-only extras.
Plus vs Pro for images, research and long documents
Coding is not the only place the plans differ. Going by the pricing page, here is how the other heavy uses compare:
- Images. Plus gets more complex and accurate image generation with higher limits than the free plan. Pro lists image generation as unlimited and faster. In our reading, Pro starts to make sense if you make images every day for work; for a few images a week, Plus should be enough.
- Deep research. Plus has expanded deep research; Pro has the maximum. Deep research reports are long multi-step jobs, so they use up an allowance quickly. If you run several a day, Plus limits are more likely to get in the way.
- Long documents. This is where Pro is most clearly different. A 150-page report fits in Pro's Instant context of about 250 pages but not in Plus's 40 pages, so on Plus you would have to split it or switch to a reasoning model. Reasoning models take about 320 pages on Plus and 680 on Pro.
- Memory. Both have memory; Pro gets the maximum memory and context.
What you pay per unit of usage
If the reported multiples are right, every plan costs the same per unit of usage:
| Plan | Price | Usage vs Plus | Price per "Plus-worth" of usage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plus | $20 | 1 | $20 |
| Pro 100 | $100 | 5 | $20 |
| Pro 200 | $200 | 10 | $20 |
| Pro 500 | $500 | 25 | $20 |
- There is no bulk discount. Pro 500 is not a better deal than Pro 100. You pay more for more usage, plus Ultrafast.
- That used to be different. Before September 29, Pro 200 was reported at 2,000% of Plus usage, which worked out to $10 per unit. New Pro 200 subscribers now get the reported 1,000%. Anyone with an active Pro 200 subscription between September 22 and September 29, 2026 keeps the old allowance until October 29, 2026.
- Since the price per unit is flat, buy the smallest plan you don't hit the limit on. A bigger plan only pays off if you actually use the extra headroom.
Codex on Plus vs Pro
Codex, OpenAI's coding agent, has the most detailed published limits, and it is the clearest practical difference between the plans.
- Plus has a rolling 5-hour window. Use it up and you wait for the reset. Weekly limits may also apply.
- Pro 100, 200 and 500 currently have no 5-hour limit in Codex and ChatGPT Work. They still have a weekly included allowance, reported at roughly 500%, 1,000% and 2,500% of Plus.
- The model you pick matters more than the plan. OpenAI's help center estimates about 5 to 45 GPT-6 Astra messages per 5-hour window on Plus, against about 15 to 160 on GPT-6.1 Sol and about 350 to 3,000 on GPT-6 Luna.
If you code with Codex every day and keep hitting the window on Plus, Pro 100 is the first plan that removes the 5-hour wait. More detail: Codex usage limits explained.
What happens when you hit the limit
The options are the same on Plus and Pro, according to OpenAI's help center:
- Wait for the reset. On Plus the 5-hour window refills within hours; weekly limits take longer.
- Use a banked reset or buy an instant reset, available on eligible Plus and Pro accounts.
- Use credits to keep going on plans that support them.
- Upgrade to a bigger plan.
- Use an API key with pay-as-you-go billing for overflow work.
If you find yourself buying resets or credits on Plus every week, compare that spending with the $80 step up to Pro 100. If you hit Pro 100's allowance and buy credits on top, compare it with Pro 200.
How to tell which plan you need: a one-week test
The usage multiples are reported, not published, so the most reliable way to choose is to measure your own use:
- Stay on Plus for a normal week. Don't change how you work.
- Check Settings > Usage in ChatGPT at the end of each day. OpenAI's help center points there for your remaining allowance and reset times.
- Count the times you hit a limit. Note whether it was the 5-hour window, the weekly limit, or a model-specific cap like GPT-6 Astra.
- Decide from the count.
- Never hit a limit: stay on Plus.
- Hit it once or twice, on the hardest days: stay on Plus and switch to a lighter model, such as GPT-6.1 Sol instead of GPT-6 Astra, when you get close.
- Hit it several times a week: move to Pro 100.
- Hit Pro 100's allowance too: Pro 200.
The same idea works in reverse. If you're on Pro 200 and rarely use more than a quarter of it, Pro 100 or even Plus may do the same job for less.
Plus and Pro vs the Business plan
If you need a shared workspace, admin controls or data excluded from training by default, OpenAI's Business plan is the other option. On the pricing page, Business seats come in two types:
| Business seat | Annual billing | Monthly billing | Usage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | $20 a month | $25 a month | Everyday work |
| Premium | $100 a month | $125 a month | More usage than Standard, with no 5-hour limit |
- Business is for teams of 2 to 200 people, not individuals.
- A Standard seat is priced like Plus but adds workspace features such as SSO and admin controls.
- A Premium seat is priced like Pro 100 with the same idea: more usage and no 5-hour wait.
For a solo user, Plus or Pro is simpler and cheaper. Business makes sense once two or more people need to share projects and billing.
Plus vs Pro: who should pick which

| You... | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Rarely hit the Plus limit | Plus | Same GPT-6 models; Pro mainly adds higher limits |
| Hit the Plus limit a few times a week | Pro 100 | The smallest step up, and no 5-hour wait in Codex |
| Paste very long documents or code | Pro 100 or higher | Context goes from 54K to 128K (Instant) and 256K to 400K (reasoning) |
| Run out on Pro 100 regularly | Pro 200 | Same price per unit, 100% more room |
| Run Codex or agents most of the day, and waiting costs you money | Pro 500 | The only Pro plan with Ultrafast |
| Only need more GPT-6 Astra for hard problems now and then | Plus, or the API | Pro is a lot to pay for occasional use |
When the API is cheaper than Plus or Pro
You don't need a subscription to use OpenAI's models. On the API you pay per token, and for light or medium use that is often cheaper. Here is roughly what a month of chat costs, assuming conversations of six messages in English. These are our estimates, not OpenAI figures.
| Your usage | GPT-6 Sol API | GPT-6 Astra API |
|---|---|---|
| 30 normal messages a day | ≈ $8 | ≈ $39 |
| 80 normal messages a day | ≈ $21 | ≈ $103 |
| 80 long messages a day (pasting documents) | ≈ $59 | ≈ $294 |
| 200 long messages a day | ≈ $147 | ≈ $735 |
"Normal" means about 150 tokens in and 500 out per message; "long" means about 2,000 in and 700 out. API list prices: GPT-6 Sol $2 input and $10 output per million tokens, GPT-6 Astra $10 and $50.
- Light users of the everyday model spend less than $20 a month on the API.
- Heavy users of GPT-6 Astra pass Pro 100's price quickly on the API.
- Long chats cost more than you'd think. Every new message re-sends the whole conversation as input.
- Language matters. In our measurements on GPT's tokenizer, Korean used about 44% more tokens than English for the same content and Japanese about 79% more, so API bills in those languages run higher by roughly the same share.
To try your own numbers, the subscription vs API calculator takes your messages per day, their length and your language, and shows the API cost next to Plus, Pro and Claude's plans.
ChatGPT Plus and Pro vs Claude Pro and Max
Anthropic's ladder looks almost the same: Claude Pro at $20 a month and Max at $100 or $200. Claude's Max plans are described as 500% or 2,000% of Pro usage per 5-hour session, and Claude Code shares the same allowance. Two differences matter when you compare them:
- Claude's $200 plan still has a bulk discount. Max 20x costs 1,000% of Pro's price for 2,000% of the usage, while ChatGPT's Pro 200 is now a reported 1,000% of Plus usage for 1,000% of the price.
- ChatGPT has a $500 tier and Claude doesn't. Pro 500 is the only one of the two ladders with a plan above $200.
The full comparison, including what a coding week costs on each, is in ChatGPT Pro vs Claude Max.
Verdict
- Plus at $20 is enough for most people. It has the same GPT-6 models as Pro, with lower limits and a smaller context window.
- Pro mostly buys volume, context and Codex time. It removes the 5-hour Codex wait, expands GPT-6 Astra limits, raises the Instant context from 54K to 128K tokens (+137%) and the reasoning context from 256K to 400K (+56%), and adds Dot and GPT-5.6 Sol Pro.
- Every Pro tier costs the same per unit of usage, if the reported multiples hold. Pick the smallest one you don't run out on.
- Light and medium users can pay less on the API. Heavy GPT-6 Astra and Codex users are better off on Pro.
